  • Why 'Free to good home' is a bad idea.

This is not about why you shouldn't rehome your dog or to make anyone feel guilty about doing it.....life happens and tough decisions have to be made somtimes.

This is about 'Bait dogs' or 'Training dogs'......

What i want to do is show people who are contemplating giving away their dog for free, the dark side of doing this. Unfortunatley these dogs are commonly snapped up by the scum of the earth posing as a 'good home'.
The scum are the under ground dog fighting community ....they could be the young lady and child, or nice well dressed man who come to collect the dog with promises of the good life and new 'furever' home but it a diffrent story once Fido is taken away.

These poor dogs are often 'disarmed' ..... which can be in the form of having all thier teeth ripped out, leg tendons deliberatley cut, mouths taped shut and jaws broken. They are then chained up so they cant escape while one or more fighting dogs tears them to shreds ...for 'training'.

Bait dogs can be ANY breed....it's all meat and flesh that can be torn up the same....but favourites of the fighting dog owner (scum) are non aggressive Pitbulls, Staffys and similar cross breeds.

Bait dogs often end up dead.

The ones who survive this torture are physically and emotionally mutilated.

So when you think the best thing to do for your dog, for whatever reaon, is to rehome it, then please do everything you can to avoid it becoming the next victim for this terrible 'sport'. A few ways to do this is to be very choosy about who will become the new owner. Ask lots and lots of questions ....make them go to a effort to prove they are good enough to own your dog.
But probably the best way to avoid the interest of these scumbags is to put a dollar value on your dog. There are to many free dogs out there unfortunately so a fighting dog owner wont want to $pend money on a bait dog.

Rehoming a dog can be very stressfull for them at the best of times....dont let them become a piece of meat that gets torn to shreds for the joy of a sick minority of our community who think that dog fighting is OK. It's animal cruelty at its worse and it must be stopped. By limiting their acess to bait dogs we wont stop them but we can make it that bit harder for them.

Free to good home dogs can also be snapped up by 'Backyard Breeders' who are another lot of scumbags contributing to animal cruelty. But i'll let someone else do a write up about this and put it in this thread that hopefully will become a 'Sticky' thread so anyone who's considering placing their dog on this forum in the giveaway section will read this and consider a diffrent approach to the rehoming of thier dog.

Dont let your dog end up like this.....

Thats what i'm hoping for Jadie....just PMed Hyacinth about it.

I'm hoping someone else will write up about Puppy mills and adding it here aswell. Its the least we can do to help our furry friends who need a new home.

I once thought that free to good home meant that you wanted a good home for your dog and didn't want to profit from it. Back then yes, that is what it meant and was what happened.

These days though....nope. I wouldn't chance doing that. So much has changed from when I was young. Such a shame that we now have to question everything...and yes...we do have to.

When I had a home fall through for a dog, I did not advertise. I contacted a rescue as I wanted to not take any chances.

I too once thought free meant you cared more for finding the 'right home'. Another innocence i was disabused of by Sean's point here. Yes please make this a sticky.

I have a couple of free dogs. One was a well bred young working bred kelpie that wasnt working out for her owner. He gave her to me because he had watched me working my dog on sheep at a herding day, and thought that she might do better with a female handler, so he offered her to me for free. He was happy to take her back if she didnt work out for me, but she did.

I have another young working bred dog that a rescue organisation picked up after he was offered free to good home in the paper. They stepped in so he wouldnt end up in the wrong home. They let me have him for free because I could offer him a performance and working home.

Free to the right home can work out well but in both cases I was known to be able offer an appropriate home.

I would never rehome my dogs to anyone I didnt have a good background information on, free or otherwise.

Me too Kalacreek....Bronx was a freebie aswell. Luckily Nev Allen from the forum found himself involved and was kind enough to think of me a a potential owner and luckily for Bronx the right kind of people ended up dealing with his situation. With the way Bo bo's is i reckon he would have been a prime dog for baiting.

With dog fighting been so underground i guess we will never really know just how many end up victims. The ones we know about are bad enough......

This is why I NEVER give away pets for free (any pet). I've always been scared of this - even when I was much younger I never trusted anyone (full stop!) with my pets unless I was there. I read about a story some years ago where 3 (Australian, I believe) soldiers were found dragging a kitten they'd found along behind a motorbike. Just tied it there. F***ing disgusting - I wish someone would tie them to the back of a truck and drag them for 1000km.

The above post should be made into a sticky too and all posts offering 'free to a good home' should be closed and linked to it.

                        Rehome Zone

It is a sticky already. If we close the rehome threads, we lose the chance to educate people and help them. Most will put a price on after we point out what can go wrong. And it's not just dog fighting.
