Thread: Bernese Mountain Dog

    Default Bernese Mountain Dog

    Hi all
I'm a brand newbie to this site having just found it this morning....
I've been looking at BMDs for years now but only just now is the right time for us. After alot of research on the breed and finally meeting one at a dog show the other day I'm convinced this is the breed for us. I've researched a few breeders in Oz (we're in northern NSW). I was just so shocked to find out the price- I was expecting around $1800, but was told $2400 is the price for a pup.
Any thoughts anyone? Or am I being unrealistic? Obviously I want one from a reputable breeder and one that is in good health from good parents.
    Cheers

That is the price I would expect for a Bernese pup from a good breeder ie one that health tests etc. Make sure you are asking lots of questions of the breeder to ascertain what they have tested for etc.

I love BMD they are absolutely gorgeous sweet dogs.

Yep that is the going price from a few good breeders that I have met on the Show circuit, as we are in the same group and barrack for one another. Sort of the same kinda dog

Same price as newfies.........They are a lovely dog, very similar to the newf, just a little smaller. Which is an advantage. Just not so much of the Natural water Rescue in them, which is what I love about newf's.

Just make sure you purchase from a Breeder who does strict health checks, as they have many similar problems as other giants. And there is a few lines with HD, from a less than reputable breeder (puppy farm). So cheaper may not be a good idea

Thanks everyone for your input. Glad to know this breeder wasn't trying to rip me off. I wish I could get one for less but am keeping a wide berth from puppy farmers.
If any of you guys who show dogs happen to come across a Bernese breeder you think is reputable please post their details on this thread if they are ok with that? I'm in Northern NSW
I LOVE Newfies too but we have too many dams and I would be forever cleaning him!!
A neighbour dropped off a Maltese puppy this morning COVERED in fleas, no collar, starving. She knew I'm a sucker for dogs of any kind. I washed him in a flea treatment shampp bath, spent the next hour and a half picking fleas off him, put a tick collar on him, fed him and went putting signs up around the neighbourhood, thinking he may have escaped someone's yard.
Well he'd escaped alright, and I would've too. The guy that owns him lives in squalor with about 7 other dogs, all without collars, all covered in fleas, one's just had a litter- the dogs are always out the front of his house chasing cars. I felt very sad giving the dog back knowing what he was going back to.
Some people shouldn't be allowed to have dogs.
Sorry about the long post, I'll stop ranting now!!
