NAME AND SHAME the brands - problem solve
Rather a large assumption to make I would of thought...based on the fact that I find it incredibly hard to believe that shelters truck bodies to pet food factories.
And I realise I'm not OM but I also find it afronting you would go as far to rudely assume an owners view of their dogs feeding practice/habits.
Bad mood much today
GageDesign Pet PhotographySite still in construction so will post link when it's finished.
I wasn't going to post, since I mostly lurk outside of picture posting... but, while I do know that not every brand of dog food is feed(able) I still don't think every piece of kibble on earth is bad for dogs. I do a rotation for Maddex right now of kibble (Earthborn Puppy Vantage) in the morning and raw food (rotation of beef and chicken each week) at night. I balance it out in between, and while I love my dog I am not going to spend every cent I have on a gourmet meal, but I am also not feeding Ol'Roy every night! I think it comes down to what you feel is best for your dog, not everyone is going to feed raw and not everyone is going to feed kibble but people shouldn't guilt others out of feeding a dog based on their diet choice. I know that a lot of people cannot afford to feed a dog a PERFECT diet, does that mean they don't deserve a dog? No. There is more to owning a dog then just their diet (at least in my opinion) and while a owner should do their research about what is going into their pets stomach it shouldn't be based around "scare tactics"if you will put out by BOTH sides (both the kibble feeders, and raw feeders).
Do what feels right to you, that's what I think!!
Wow some pretty harsh comments made in here about people's choices.
I feed my dogs commercial from the supie. And have been doing so for about 2 years now. Prior to that weve done, vet food, raw and home made. They also eat people scraps. Call me a bad dog owner, I couldnt care less. I have two happy, healthy, energetic dogs with excellent teeth for their ages, good muscle and very shiny coats - commented on by vets. They do also get some raw still but the majority is dry and tinned commercial food. In fact, I have never seen a dog as shiny as Barney (must be all that lethal injection goodness huh) - I can provide a photo of how gorgeously healthy he appears if anyone is interested.
I feed my kid takeaways too, at least once a week. And, OMG, shes even allowed coke. I must be a terrible mother also.
I am not fussed if road kill goes into dog food to be honest, not really any different to buying a carcass. However, I find it super hard to believe euthanised pets go into dog food. And if tey do in Australia, then its extremely backwards. There are laws about the disposal of euthanised animals in NZ and they must be cremated or buried in a mass grave (at least they used to have to be).
They did a study in NZ a number of years ago comparing some raw diets, vet diets and a number of supermarket brands, and some of the cheaper supermarket brands were almost as good as the "perfect" diets.....though it may have been cat food.
Anywho, currently commercial works for us and until I get fed up with it, or notice some health related issues, I will stick with what we are currently doing.
And I dont care what anyone on this forum thinks about me doing it to be honest
I think some people put to much time and energy into worrying about what other people feed their dogs than is probably necessary. If someone is asking for advice go for your life if not putting them down over their choices is not really needed.
There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.
The dog's digestive system has evolved to be able to process a variety of things that modern humans find unpleasant. Back in the good old days before dogs became as domesticated as they are today, dogs ate what they killed or found, when they killed or found it. So it would not be uncommon for a dog to go days without a meal. A wild dog would be over the moon to find a truckload of rotting roadkill or euthanised pets. Mother dogs would eat their puppies faeces to keep the den clean, a tradition continued by many dogs today, with no ill effects.
So if your dog food contains some form of meat, meat derivatives and vegetable matter, it is most likely more balanced than the dog's natural diet. What is more of an issue than the quality of the food we are feeding our dogs is the quantity. Dog owners do far more damage to their pets through over feeding and underexercising than they do by feeding the wrong food.
If in doubt ask your vet, he's not part of the conspiracy.
WoW - sooooo many reactions to this thread !
Maybe some need to 'settle petal' a bit. I really do not understand why so many of you are being so defensive here !
We all do what we can afford to do money wise and time wise to do the best that we can do for either family or pets !
I have always thought that what your individual family or pets do well on - then that is what you feed them !
lol i only react when someone is personally attacking me, most of the time I post in good humour.
