I was meeting people for breakfast this morning and I've been meaning to introduce my pup to my friend's dogs for a while now to socialise him, I don't know many people with dogs, so he hasn't been getting much exposure. I was going to be on the same side of town, so I thought I'd bring my pup along and ask her to babysit while I'm at breakfast and then come and hang out for a bit afterwards. I made sure to go over a bit early just to supervise the introductions and make sure everything was fine before I left him under my friend's care. I was a bit unsure of how it would go since she has 3 dogs, and it was on their turf and one of them apparently can be a bit funny with some dogs, but it all went pretty well and I was very impressed with how Dexter behaved.
We introduced them one at a time, from smallest(foxy x) to biggest(BC x cattledog) and on lead so my pup could approach or not if he wanted. They all were fine. The Foxy cross was a bit weirded out though, he seemed fine at first, but once we let them both off lead together he seemed scared of my pup and I had to stop Dexter a couple of times because the foxy was turning away, licking and trying to walk away and Dex ignored that and kept following him trying to lick him. The BC cross can apparently be a bit weird with some dogs, so I watched them carefully. She sniffed him a lot and was wagging her tail but she's got a stumpy tail(natural) and cropped ears(medical reason) so it's a bit hard to tell what she's thinking. She kinda ran after him a few times, wasn't growling or biting at him or anything but we tried to distract her when she did this just so she didn't keep doing it (she came across as curious more than anything). Eventually after they all had one on one time, I tried two of them with Dex and they were all fine, the foxy was a bit more confident with the other one there, so I let in the BC again and it all went pretty smoothly. Dexter was definitely the centre of attention, all the dogs came and sniffed him and they just followed each other around, so I was happy to leave them under my friend's supervision then. I made sure Dex had his crate there that he could escape into if he felt he needed to, and he did a couple of times, but came straight back out again and he coped very well and was generally being quite polite to all the others.
While I was gone she told me her dogs had a bit of a snap at each other, but no one did anything to Dexter and they were all just following around still. Dex was obviously tired when I got back, probably a massive mental overload for him, so I took him home and he's now passed out on my lap. Hopefully I can keep taking him back every so often for visits. I'll have to take some photos next time when I'm less focused on how they're interacting.
I was very proud of Dex though, at puppy class he was a bit terrified of the other puppies, they were all bigger than him and all very confident and bouncy which made him a bit cautious of approaching most of them. I was hoping he'd get along with my friend's dogs since the biggest is medium sized and the youngest is a few years old so they'd be less bouncy than puppies.
