Oh the joys of 'choosing a dog', hey!
I remember our first dog (waaaaaay back in the mists of time). Dad wanted a Border Collie. I wanted an Afghan Hound. Mum wasn't overly fussed about either but liked Rough Collies. In the end we rescued a baby Dobe from a litter dumped by the side of the road. Pathetic wee thing he was- 5 weeks old maybe, starved, tummy full of carpet he'd eaten, poor coat. Every one of us fell in love within minutes and he ended up being an awesome dog and the beginning of my love of Dobes.
Of course I did get my afghan hounds later on, as well as a couple of JRT Kelpie crosses, and an Irish Wolfhound. Every one of them has been awesome in his own way, though I think Irish Wolfhounds will always represent my heart breed. Too short lived though.
So, I guess what I'm saying is keep an open mind along with doing your research... You just never know what may be perfect in the end.
