Cooma is close to the snow (1 hour trip) so areas around there. I know a few alternative life stylers that liked Adaminaby (scuse spelling). Jindabyne is closer but prices are for tourists. And Cooma is close to Bega/Tathra - lovely beaches and food. There's lots of places in the snow country on both the NSW and Vic side. Ovens Valley is beautiful too.
But NZ has more snow. My fav snowy place around there was Wannaka. But I don't like being cold all the time - I liked Canberra - it snowed there too occasionally. In NZ my fav places were around Bay of Islands and up north - but it's warm there. No snow. You could grow anything there, handy to Auckland if you needed anything. Auckland thinks it's Sydney but it's more like Adelaide or Perth. Not as well off as most of Perth seems to be now.
