Was just so pleased to find the forum and get stuck right into it was remiss in not introducing ourselves. Both hubby and self retired just over 4 years to small miner's cottage on the York Peninsula in South Australia. Came with our cat "Dusker" (hence my stage name)--a Burmese indoor cat that owns the place and at that time a similar aged supposedly kelpie Jess -- supposedly cos she only cost us $10-- say no more! They were wonderful buddies, but the partnership ended early last year when Jess just wore out and we very sadly did what we know we have to do when the time comes. We were devastated and neither hubby or I were really ready to go down the track of another dog for quite awhile. Then when we started to talk, we hit a stale mate with "breeds". I had to stick to my guns as all he wanted was a kelpie and I just knew that we were not in the right location and the limbs were not nimble enough to cope with the exercise--and he didn't want a poodle! We had one as a second dog and although much loved is was not what hubby wanted this time round. So dogless we remained for many months.
I was fortunate to go on an overseas trip with my Sister in February; and returned to find the golden bundle which became Missy. Hubby and daughter had been in cahoots! Thrilled at once; in love at once. My heart still breaks at the thought of Jess my $10 dog whose only claim to fame was to show her love to us in placing her trust in us. She lay by my side on the floor each night. Now I have a new golden body who has taken her role.
