So I hear the dogs going apeshit and it's not the usual "possum in a tree" type sound. It's more like a "possum right in front of me" sound.
So I walk up to the door and I can see the dogs facing each other about a metre apart and lunging at something in the middle. I cant see what it is but Im thinking, oh the mongrels have a lizard or something I better save it.
I open the door and there is a bloody snake there! I yelled at the dogs to get the hell away from it and quickly put them in the washhouse.
Then, contrary to how I believed I would act (i.e. killing it), I chucked a roasting tray over the top of it. As I was lowering it, the stupid thing moved real quick and gave me a very big fright and made me a bit shaky.
Dogs are now safely inside, and snake is under the tray awaiting the OH coming home from footy so we can release it down the road.
I rang a snake catcher and they think it sounds like a white crown snake but said hard to tell without a pic.
For anyone who is interested though, it is a dark coloured snake (lighting isnt good so cant tell exact colour) with a light coloured stripe on the back of its head (white or yellow). Its about 30 or 40 cms long and quite thin.
Apparently, they are mildly venoumous but reluctant to bite, prefering to head butt. They are also nocturnal which would explain being out at night.
Pretty exciting. I want to get a photo but I am now too scared to remove the roasting tray in case it "gets me" - despite the fact that I could stand in such a way as to be well out of striking distance LOL
Also, if the dogs had been bitten....how would I know? Would they have yelped? Or what should I look out for?
