In the processor first:
1. Grate 1 or 2 carrots (depends on the size of the batch you want to end up with, and what % of the meal you want to be vegies comapred to meat/carbs)
2. Blitz 1/4 head brocoli, the head of 1/2 a celery (the leaves and all - the bits we throw out or use for soups, there are masses of nutrients and flavour in celery leaves), and a small handful of green beans until the pieces are fairly small (<10mm)
In a large pot:
Brown gravy beef (or equiv) pieces really well in EVOO
Add just enough hot water to just cover beef, bring to a rapid boil
Remove to a really low burner, add lid (keep ajar for steam escape or even on a low heat it may boil over if completely covered) and allow to just simmer for 2 - 4 hours (depending on how much meat is in the pot)
1 hour before you want to serve, add a handful of pearl barley (unsoaked) and vegie medley
15 minutes before service, add white rice (or 30 mins prior add brown rice)
When cookied, add a cornstarch slurry to thicken
Return to high heat and boil fully for at least one minute to activate the gluten in the cornstarch slurry
Remove back to lowest heat and finish cooking.
Allow to cool to body temperature before serving to your doglet... freezes beautifully. Depending on how much liquid and thickening agent you added, the finished product should be thick enough to feed out of hand.
And of course, you can eat this right alongside your doglet!
