I used to own Australian Kelpies. A very similar breed with their requirements.
Mine were from show lines and not working lines. This makes a huge difference. Do not bring a working Border Collie into suburbia unless you are a very dedicated dog owner looking to involve yourself in dog sports.
I would say the same thing of all the Australian Working dogs.
Research your breeder and go for a more laid back line.
Since marrying in to a ready made family I no longer have Kelpies, may last old girl passed away in 2007. Prior to that I used to have up to 8 in a suburban back yard (large old 1/4acre block) but I was obsessed with training, was a bit of a fitness freak etc and my life revolved around either showing them, trialling them or hanging out with other like minded people.
Whether it's a show Border Collie or not you still very much need to give them things to do and obedience training is great otherwise they very easily become hole diggers or barkers.
