I always at least have four dogs........We are on a farm, but also work away from the place some days. Ours stay in the house and have free access to our screened verandahs. which the dogs love. In Summer we leave fans on. My main reason for leaving them in the house is that it is the coolest place in Summer. And our dogs always seem so good. We do have a kennel room with a large run, but we hardly use it. Only for Fosters and Rescues and when Katy is in season. In Winter we always leave a door open to the verandah, except for the very coldest of days.
I work hard at my dogs getting used to being alone and not always with us. Some of the rescues would love to be velcro dogs, but I make them have alone time. By teaching them place, crating and getting used to being in the Kennel. We do it slowly and for short periods, increasing the time. It now means that everyone just settles when we leave....I am sure they sleep most of the day. Some of their toys get moved around, so they do get up.
We have done this with all our dogs, newfies, Collies, ACD's, GSD"s and our working Kelpies. Our dogs have always been inside when we are inside...They have free choice with the doggy door until about 9pm. After that if they are hot it is the verandah's
