When I left to go food shopping on Saturday morning I saw Lades and she was fine and normal. When I came home an hour later she was laying on her bed. I went over and gave her a scratch behind the ear and she started leaning on me really heavily. I moved my hand and she fell off the bed and just lay there.
This was obviously a problem!
I lifted her up and she stood and wobbled, and dropped back down very heavily. She couldn't walk so I picked her up and put her in the car and straight to the vet. She usually barks and goes absolutely crazy in the car, but nothing. She layed on her side with her eyes closed and violently twitching every now and then.
As a vet nurse, my first guess was she had eaten rat or snail bait somehow(also Roly my Jack Russell was poisoned by a neighbour with snail bait a couple of years ago).
We got to the vet(not the one I work at, I like to get an unbias view) and told them it was an emergency and was asked to take a seat. I had to wait for half an hour while dogs casually walked in for vaccinations while im sitting in the seat with Lady half dead in my arms.
The vet looked her over and her temperature was slightly lowered, she had perfect vision and her heart was beating steadily. Her gag reflexes were barely working at all though. We were both very confused as to what it would be but Lady couldn't even stand by this point.
He said they'd take her away and pump her stomach in case she had been poisoned and take it from there. I said my worst case scenario goodbyes at 11:30 and they took her away.
I got a call at 12 saying they had pumped her stomach and nothing came out, so they were now going to shave her in case she had a tick. They shaved off all her beautiful long chocolate brown fur and found...nothing. They then gave her the anti tick serum by about 2 incase there was a tick in her anus, vulva or deep in her ear and said they'd call me in a couple of hours. Came to 4..no word. Came to 8..no word. By 11pm I finally got a call from the vet saying she was making steady improvement and if she was still looking better by the morning, she could come home.
Its now Monday, and yes my girl is now home! With a whopping $1,182 vet bill.
She has to be kept quiet for the next two weeks, with no walking and must be toileted on a lead. Its gonna be torture for her! (Kelpie X Border Collie).
No one suspected the tick at first(especially myself) because she had missed all the first signs of grunting and coughing and no vomiting, and on top of that I live in an area where ticks aren't common at all. I'm so so relieved she's going to be ok, it was a very very scary experience and a lot of time spent very anxious!
She looks so funny all shaved, my cat doesn't recognise her and hisses everytime he sees her. I took a photo on my phone but im struggling to get it onto the computer.
