I'm having a bit of an issue with getting Banjo to swim. She is a pretty strong swimmer. But when I take her to our local swimming hole, I just cannot get her to go in. She will eventually go in if another dog is swimming - but not just any dog either. Not sure what the requirements are there. And today I was amazed when I'd been trying to persuade her to go in - throwing in sticks, gently pulling her on the lead (BIG mistake!), walking in myself and calling her - and she would not even dip her feet in. I was just explaining this to another dog owner when she threw a pebble in the water whilst calling Banjo's name and Banjo just jumped in and started swimming around! Then she started swimming after the ducks for ages. Until eventually she seemed to get too exhausted and looked/sounded like she was about to sink! But she got back ok.
Then there were the times I took her to the river and she just got in without prompting to play in the strong current.
So I really have no idea what the problem is here. Most dogs I know just get in the water anywhere when it's hot once they have been swimming a few times.
Any ideas why she might be so hesitant to get into still water - until she apparently forgets her reservations? Any tips on how to persuade her to get in? It's too hot to take her for walks unless she is wet on days like today, so this is quite important. She also has a real fear of water being poured over her so I cannot just wet her down with a bucket either.
