My neighbour got a dog about two years ago from a petshop, it's one of those ugly cross breeds that are cute puppies.
And he's got no idea about dog training, frequently scolds his dog when it barks, scolds it and HITS it when it finally comes when he calls it. Calls it over and over - ie its name is "broken".
And now they have a second puppy.
I just heard the "introduction". Went something like "be gentle" - how can the first dog possibly understand that? And both were off lead and in the older dog's back yard. So naturally the older dog having fiercely guarded the back yard for a couple of years now and having no doggy social skills - not allowed to play with other dogs, - it attacks the puppy. and the puppy squeals.
And my neighbour scolds his dog for attacking the other dog.
So many mistakes and behaviours that will make things worse not better.
But as some of you occasionally notice - my people skills are not always the best. And I do know that a lot of people do not like unsolicited advice or help. My neighbour - despite getting to watch what I do with my dog every night - including how I deal with the barking and recall - has not asked me for help or advice about anything dog related. He knows I go to club and dog training seminars and yet he doesn't ask. And I've offered a couple of times to have play dates with his dog but it's a bit too late now, it doesn't play nice.
Do you suppose if I lend them Turid's Calming Signals dvd - that would help? Or maybe SG's crate games?
Or is it best left alone - although I know the dogs will suffer if I don't do something.
