I see a lot of difference in inside and outside dogs, when i Instruct at the Kennel Club and when i do Private lessons. i am not saying there are no well trained outside dogs, but a large percentage of outside dogs only do not get enough attention.
This especially happens in Winter, when the dogs is outside for many many hours, because it is too cold and too dark early.
Indoor dogs also get a lot of training whilst they are inside. They often have to "place" and get one on one time with their owners for moments here and there. I always tell my Students to use every opportunity to do a sit/drop/stay. And when you are both inside this gives many many opportunities.
Most of our own dogs are trained indoors all the time...boredom leads to teaching little tricks, whilst just hanging around in the lounge room, especially in Winter.
I am not saying you cannot have a dog as a outdoor dog only, but you will have to make a lot more effort to get the connection and training. Many people will shoot me down here, but i like my pack nearby. Mine are not treated like children, but because they are around us cooking, eating and such things. they can deal with people eating and such. they just sit in their own place, unless asked.
It is this constant training that makes a good dog......Mind you the worst dogs are those that are indoors and rule the roost, no manners and no training.
Our work-dogs were also indoor dogs at night....we tried to keep our work dogs out side many years ago, because people said we should. But seeing their sad faces when the others came in, they wanted to be part of the pack. So they too came inside and still worked well.
This is just purely my own thoughts on how dogs need to be. they need to be with us. I find nothing sadder than a lonely dog left in the yard.At least if you have two, they have company.
Many of the dogs i help re-train are lonely dogs that do not have enough time spent with them. And that time can be just lying at your feet, whilst you are wasting time on the computer. Like two of mine are now, Actually three
