I don't know why the media has suddenly found dog attacks so exciting.
I do know that the way dog attacks have been counted has recently changed to include counting dogs that harrass or frighten people or animals - whether or not damage was done and in SA they've started including dog attacks - where the people went to hospital emergency but were able to go straight home after getting treated - ie didn't need surgery to get stitched back up.
So in SA and NSW that has roughly doubled the count. But the number of attacks that meet the new criteria - probably hasn't changed much.
Its stunning how people will identify any cross breed that looks vaguely staffy x as a "pitbull". One of the latest has RSPCA's chief Knob head Hugh Wirth refering to it as an "English Bull Terrier" when he means "Bull Terrier". And they think it's a cross but it looks like a purebred to me.
