I have a VW LWB Transporter as my dog car. It's all set up for them. The dog gear (c-crates, show stuff, brushes etc) all remain in the car.
We installed a rear folding seat and another window (sliding) for when the teenagers come along.
I can fit in dogs and kids all in comfort and it's also good on fuel and nice to drive.
If you don't have large dogs & you don't intent to 4wheel drive then you'd probably get more for your money on a standard 2wheel drive station wagon.
I dont particulary like the looks of the mazda cx7's (just as well because they cost a bomb!) and the xtrail and rav4 are a little boxey for my liking. I'm a little fussy..!
I'm caught between the ASX and the Dualis but both are quite new cars to the market so it's hard to find cheap second hand ones! Other than that i am still considering a toyota corolla or VW golf but the golf is in the same price range as the SUV's and the corolla only a few grand less.

I dunno how you can say you like the dualis and not a wagon. It is a wagon. Isn't it?
I have a landcruiser 100 series - wagon. Love it. But I've liked tanks all my life. Learned to drive in a holden premier wagon and two short wheel base land cruisers.
Would avoid landrover discoveries unless you like having a car at the mechanics a lot. They're not as reliable as they used to be.
I have a soft spot for the subaru forester too.
You can get so much more stuff into a wagon or hatch back compared to a sedan. I don't think I will ever own a sedan again.
When i say wagon i mean those holden commodore type wagons you see around with the very long body. Basically a sedan but with an extra long body. The type of cars I'm looking at are compact SUV's apparently. My dad calls his landcruiser 'the truck' and i definitely don't need anything that large! haha.
I think those ASX are pretty neat! I just use a Hiace LWB.
If you find yourself going through hell; Don't stay. Just keep on going.

I drive a Subaru Outback. Fantastic car. It is still a wagon as such but not as long as a Falcon or a Commodore. It is still AWD so it goes over curbs and drives down dirt roads with ease which is great if you like to take your dogs on bushwalks!
I was also seriously considering the Subaru Forrester which is more of an SUV than the Outback is.
But yeah, definately recommend an Outback. I picked mine up for $11000. It is a 1998 model but only had 92,000kms on the clock!
Good luck finding a car that suits you. You'll have to let us know what you end up with
Nissan Pathfinder - 99 top of the line model (power windows, sun roof etc etc), $8000.
Pretty good car, loads of room for my two dogs, can fit in crates if need be. Bit exe on fuel but is due for a major service which I think it causing it to chew fuel.
I've got a Mazda Tribute which is great with three dogs, its a four-wheel drive for camping and great on fuel on the highways (though not so great in city/suburb)
