Don't wash more then monthly or you strip the natural oils from their skin too often and it can start some pretty nasty skin conditions, learnt by me the hard way. Aloveen Oatmeal Dog Shampoo & Conditioner it is aloe vera and oatmeal based, very mild and smells great (under $30 for a pack with shampoo and conditioner) works really well is relatively cheap, lasts for ages if you don't go overboard with it and it works even better if you use the conditioner as a leave in (it's safe and is even made to leave in) by just rinsing over with a ltr of warm water.
I would also be dropping in for a talk to the vet if it continues more then a few days/week after a soothing wash just in case he has an allergy or something else going on that is causing the itch. Personally I wouldn't use human shampoo or conditioner even more so if they have sensitive skin. To clean in between we wet a chamois and rub some of the Aloveen conditioner in to it and just wipe down the dogs, we have both a long and short coat dog and it works well no smelly dog even works on the cats lol
