My dog was an outside dog before I got her, so we had some accidents in the house at night in the first week. I did the whole, take her out at regular intervals and praise abundantly for doing her business and it worked pretty fast.
I do normally let her out at around 9pm and that seems to be enough for her to last until we get up at 7am.
But last night I did not check if she actually did her business. So at 0:30am she jumped right on top of me to wake me up! I didn't get it at first - told her off and she went to lie down again - but when I got up to go to the loo myself as I was awake anyway, it was clear she needed to go out.
I thought it was pretty clever of her! But obviously, it's not an ideal way for her to let me know she needs to go.
I know you can teach a dog to touch a bell as a sign they need to go out. But I'm a bit worried that she'll use it all the time when she wants to go chew a bone late at night.
What do your dogs do when they happen to have to go when you're asleep?
