Hi all, I found this group by searching google. Im glad I have found it as Im pretty upset and confused about my sick boy Cooper.
I will explain briefly what has happend over the past week and a half..
He is a 6 yr old Corgie X Fox Terrier.
About 2 weeks ago he started becoming sore down the bottom of his spin and every time I pressed it he would yelp, then it started getting worse when I would pick him up he would yelp. He started to be a bit hunched over when he walked and would try find a spot by himself so I wouldnt pick him up and hurt him, he then wouldnt go outside or walk around very much. I was concerned thinking he pulled a disc or something in his back so I took him to the vet and they did an xray on him, the xray showed that he had something near the bottom of his spin but they couldnt say what it was. The vet was sure he was at the beginging stages of arthritis and his spine was inflammed, so he was giving a shot of anti inflammatory and pain management needle, she gave me some steriods to take home to give him over the week.
Over the week he didnt improve, he started getting more pain and it became worse, he was yelping if i moved his head the slightest bit upwards to give him his tablet so I took him back, this time I saw a diff vet, he did blood tests, urine tests and a medical examination, he said it was most likley meningitis possible, viral or bactrial or even Steroid Responsive Meningitis.
Now as the blood/urine tests showed no signs or infection does this mean it could still be meningits? The vet said it can be..I am confused as I dont think they REALLY know and Im very upset. He has been to the vet twice today to get more antibiotic (meningitis treatment) injection and pain relief needle too.
He is in his basket at the moment, with a blanket and the heater near him, he wont get up and walk and he has wee'd himself but I think thats because he is on pain relief which has made him sleepy and a bit un-aware of whats going on.
Im scared as I seen things on the internet about dogs dying from this....Does anyone know if Steroid Responsive Meningitis is caused by being given steroids in the first place? Does this mean my VET caused my dog to get sick? I have spent almost 300 dollars so far for seeing the vet and treatment, they are a well known vets and they have a good reputation. I dont want my dog to die I dont know what I would do, he is like a child to me I love him...
Please help with anything you know, I need some support.....
Thank you, sorry its so long but I REALLY hope someone takes the time to read this and write back.
Im awaiting your reply
LOVE LAUREN xo
