I have two Schnauzers and I was very reluctantly getting the first because I feared I don't know enough about dogs and was paranoid that I might be allergic to dogs afterall.
So I kept my first standard at arm's length. He lived outside, slept in the shed and I spent lots of time outside in an outdoor room with him.
We slowly got used to one another. He kept coming closer.
His injuries and lots of tick checking got us in close physical contact.
My dog had a lot of confidence in me.
It took about a year, a major flood even on the mid north coast and a severe cold (one I had and one my hubbie had) to move closer to us.
And I still remember the day, when something negative happened, he was at my feet, I gave him a hug and felt instantly good.
He now sleeps in the house every night.
When we need him, he is allowed up on the couch and he groans and sighs with pleasure!!
Someone in a German Schnauzer-Pinscher Forum has a saying in his signature: Dogs may dirty the sheets, but clean the (human) soul.
He is right.
I have become a dedicated and mostly confident dog owner.
I love my Schnauzers.
