For those who have crates and arent afraid to use them.
Im crating the pup who's 8 weeks.
We have a 2yr desexed male GSD who's friendly to all dogs he meets.
The pup gets that if it goes in the crate, the GSD cant fit in there.
The dogs appear to get on well. The pup is bold, confident, and even a sharp bark from big bro does not phase her at all. She just steals the next toy whilst he's distracted.
Bernie is very gentle with her, plays 'tug of war' really softly, despite being able to pull me off the sofa when we're playing, he's gently tugging for the pup.
We feed Bernie first, who has decided that pup should get fed too, and brings food to the pup and drops it at pups feet. Including last nights belly of pork bones. Ate all but one, then gave it to pup.
The play can get a little rough at time though. On both parts. Pup bites at the GSD, which occasionally you hear him yelp. And pup submits onto her back. Similarly, if GSD gets too rough, pup yelps, and GSD stops and licks her and waits for her to bound at him again.
So, so far so good.
How long till i can safely leave GSD with pup outside of crate, say in garden? I read somewhere approx first 2 weeks. Why 2 weeks, and not 4 or 1?
What is it im judging this on? I need criteria to assess. Not just a time line and hoping all you lucky multi dog families can offer some advice.
I generally run GSD off leash with other dogs. For the first 3 days, ive had him on leash, worried he'll protect the pup.
When the 2 viemaranas (spelling?) arrived this morning. GSD rounded up pup to between my legs or his, and wouldnt let it leave the 'safety zone' whilst the 2 large dogs were near. He was fine with the bitches, but the intact male was clearly too much.
I want to avoid developing gaurding aggression in Bernie GSD.
As pup is a rottie x dogue de bordeaux, it will get larger fast. Might that help?
