My friend had this dog called Sasha. Occasionally she would rip things up wen people went out. When they came home, they would always know if she had done this because she would hide instead of meeting them at the door. They would never tell her off (whats the point if she isnt caught in the act) so she was hiding because she knew she did something wrong IMO.
Also, my wee dog Pippi, is quite the naughty little tart. She will check to see if anyone is watching before doing something naughty, to me, this indicates that she understands what she is about to do is wrong and could get her in trouble so she is trying to not get caught. If I pretend I havnt seen her and let her do the naughty thing, she will act normal until I am about to get anywhere near the evidence and she immediately goes into a$$ licking guilt mode.
When she has an "accident" inside she hides in the bedroom until I find the evidence.
I call her.. she comes very slowly with her ears back and tail between her legs.
I ask her if she did that and she runs straight to the back door to go outside for punishment
A pessimist sees the glass as half empty;
An optimist sees the glass as half full;
A realist just finishes the damn thing and refills it.
My dog acts exactly the same.
She doesn't care or know why I'm angry, she just grovels. It's got nothing to do with what she's done, and everything to do with what I'm doing.
She does this insanely guilty grovel look all hunched up with her ears back and down when she wants food or permission to eat too.
Dogs are opportunists - they do whatever works.

I know all about the studies, I just dont think they always gel.
Pippi hides evidence. She will get in the rubbish and then go and hide all the stuff she has taken in the back room (after checking to see if we are watching her first before she gets in the rubbish)....where she cant get caught coz noone can see her. If she finishes with it and is in the lounge with us, the minute I get up and head anywhere near the back room (which could mean Im heading to the kitchen from where I still cant see the damage) she is immediately in ass licking mode even though I havent seen the "damage" yet and therefore have not reacted at all.
I used to complete agree with the humanising thing until I met Pippi. I can say to Barney at any time "who did that" and he will immediately cringe regardless if it was him. Pippi won't. If its not her, she wont react at all.
I know it sound slike complete rubbish and humanisation but ya have to see it to believe it I guess...maybe I should video one of her little rubbish escapades which she tries on nightly.
Cant watch the clips yet but just wanted to add that in my opinion also ,oh yes , they know .
GageDesign Pet PhotographySite still in construction so will post link when it's finished.
Yeh Miley hides before I even find the evidence.... which she also does in places she doesn't think I will check.
