My dog just turned one, and she is now in heat - which is absolutely a nightmare for us, because she keeps running away. Usually, her and our old dog ( a 15 year old desexed kelpie boy) have their own large area outside with a kennel, outdoor beds and plenty of space to run around, and they have always been happy there. But a couple of days ago, we came home in the afternoon to find our dog running around the streets. The fences around the backyard and the house are 1.80 (the actual dog fence is 1,20 ), and we couldnt understand how she got away. The next day we came home only to find her being gone again. We found her easily enough, but decided then to tie her up in that area when we were not at home. It hurt, but what could we do? The dogs are walked both in the evening and in the morning, and when we are home, the dog fence is opened and they can walk wherever they want in the backyard, and inside the house. None of them likes being inside much, though, only when theres a big storm
So, the next morning my husband took the car for a drive, and the dog got really restless. She started yelping and jumping up and down, and even though I went outside to calm her down and show her I was still at home, I felt I had no choice but to put her lead back on and have her tied to the house.
We went for a little drive, after she calmed down, gave them some treats and extra cuddles (we thought she might have entered a phase where she felt lonely, so we gave her some special attention), but when we came back, she was gone again. The collar was still attached to the lead, so she had taken that off somehow. Again, she was nearby and came home right away, but we put her collar and lead back on, didnt see how she got out of there at all.
In the evening last night, while we were here, she did the same thing again. Her collar was still here, and she had jumped the fence. While we were all here.
This morning she has been crazy. My husband left for work, and she went absolutely berserk. Yelping and crying, and jumping up and down and trying to get out, I walk up to her an tell her off, and give her cuddles, dont understand what she needs, Im here, theres no need to run, WHY? So this morning she has already jumped the fence twice. She removes the collar and jumps up and jumps down on the other side. I caught her in the act the last time, and told her off about it, but that was the moment I realized that this might very possibly be her being in heat for the first time and it makes her restless.
We have not desexed her, but will definately do that if this is how she will be acting!
This is the first time we have a girl, and was wondering if anyone agrees with me, that this could very possibly be the reason, and if you have any advice on how to cope with this?
