Police are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains at a residence in Surry Hills yesterday.
About midday (5 July), police attended the residence on Kippax Street, Surry Hills.
They were responding to a call from the relative of an elderly woman who said she hasn’t been seen since 2003.
Upon entering an upstairs bedroom at the residence, police located skeletal remains on the floor.
The remains have not been formally identified. However, police believe they belong to a woman who would have been 87 next month.
Police do not believe the death is suspicious.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
“It’s sad that the woman appears to have died several years ago without anyone noticing,” Acting Superintendent Zoran Dzevlan of Surry Hills Local Area Command said.
“This serves as a reminder for people to keep a neighbourly eye on those who live in their area, especially the elderly.”
