I think his coat is too short to have flat coated retriever or golden retriever in him.
i think he is BC cross Lab or Kelpie cross Lab.
I am also thinking that the owners did get golden mixed up with lab!
He doesnt have to have long hair to have retriever in him. The cross can take the characteristics of either parent, a mixture of either parent...or something new.
I know quite a few BC cross Goldens. We have a person in our district who has bred many and they have been through the rescues.
One of mine is a BC cross Golden and all the ones I know have a longish coat, like Tessa.
I would go with the Labrador cross kelpie. I also know a few of those at the Kennel Club and they look very similar. Great to train for obedience
