Yes, another allergy thread sorry! I've had a look at all the previous threads on this subject but none of them really seem to apply to my problem..
Our 13 week old staffyxlab has developed a real nasty itchy all over his belly..whilst the rash comes and goes, his belly is always red and somewhat inflamed. We took him to the vet last night, as his eye had become pussy so we got both issues checked out at once. The vet did a skin scrape to test for mange/fleas and put some ink in his eyes to check to for scratches etc. Both came back negative for anything. He has a bit of an infection in his eye from rubbing it so much and she said the rash/itching is allergies to either food/insects/plants. He has been put on necort cream and eye drops for a week.
We have to go back in 7 days and if no better the vet suggests we start him on a food diet formulated for allergies for 8 weeks (didn't catch the name unfortunately) or give him steriod injections. He is currently fed eukanuba dry biscuits and a slice of tuckertime (i have been giving him the adult tuckertime rather than the puppy but the vet said this wouldn't be a cause of the allergy). I am going to go out and get the puppy one though. He also gets chicken wings as a treat. I really don't think it's the food that is causing the problem though because the rash only developed in the past few weeks :S
Infact, the rash has only gotten worse since we started leaving him outside during work hours. He rubs himself along the lawn (in an effort to scratch his belly). The grass is couch, which i think might be the problem..but if it is how do we pinpoint this?? I am also going to buy some of that aloveen oatmeal shampoo and bath him with this tomorrow. Is this ok the bath puppies with?
I am just confused because i have read in a few places that allergies shouldn't develop in dogs until they are much older than 3 months! Has any one got any other ideas on what i can do? breaks my heart to see him in pain
