I have no problem with cross-breeding as long as it is done properly.... it costs literally thousands of dollars for some of the tests needed to responsibly breed dogs... people aren't going to do that with their $50 mutts they bought out the newspaper.
There are some people out there who genuinely do these tests on cross-breds, good on them! But don't lie about doing the tests when you don't. If mutts ahd the same treatment as many purebred litters the price would skyrocket... purebreds aren't expensive just for the sake of it (not counting the irresponsible, bad purebred breeders).
And yes, there are members of the ANKC who are not reputable, we have seen examples of it on this very site with a member buying a Rottweiler with a heart defect... but it is up to the buyer to investigate and find out what breeder is best. You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it. ANKC registered is a great thing to have, it means that if the breeder is CAUGHT they can be barred and fined, but they have to be caught first, and that's where the dog police come in, people like you and me who dob these bad breeders in.
I don't think discussions like this scare anyone away, if anything it makes people aware of how important doing things the right way are. There are some horrible, horrible diseases that dogs can get that can be tested for, there is no need for dogs to go blind from PRA, there is no need for a whole litter of dogs to get HD by the time they are 5...
The average pet breeder either does it for the money, or for cute little foo-foos, either way they aren't going to be spending all that money to stop their pups having PRA or HD, they probably don't even know what it is!
