I am a newbie, and after posting in the intro threads I thought I may find someone who 'has the knowledge' and who may be able to point me in the right direction.
My 18 month old BC is a perpetual wanderer. I don't know exactly when it started, but over the last 6 months he has definitely increased the occurrences and durations.
He is desexed, and didn't exhibit this behavior as a pup. It has gotten to the point that he cannot be let off the run because he bolts as soon as your back is turned. While you are paying attention to him he stays home, stays with you, but if you stop paying attention (looking at him/talking to him) he disappears.
He has started taking our 3 month old beagle puppy with him as well.
Today he was let off to stretch his legs, I got distracted and he did the bolt with her. Didn't them until 5:45 this afternoon.
He is perfectly behaved whilst on a short leash, or on a long leash, but as soon as he is off the leash he loses all respect for me and doesn't pay attention to any commands unless he feels like it.
I have tried an electric/radio fence, and he would bolt through the perimeter and ignore the pulses. Our yard is fenced, but not to a standard that will keep him permanently in the yard. We are replacing the fencing, but the financial situation limits the amount we can do in any one time.
What are my options? What would/did you do in my situation?
