So I am breaking in a little mare at the moment. She's learned how to escape from electric fencing, whether it's electrified or not.
When we got home from the pony club breakup last week, we put the two geldings in the top paddock, the one with grass long enough to keep them clean when they roll. After a while the mare came on season, and she escaped from the bottom paddock that she was in. She ran up the driveway, and down the road, near where the boys were. Romeo is my pony, who used to be a stallion until a few years back, so he is still 'el stallione', meaning that he still acts like a stallion even though he hasn't got the junk. So of course he went a tad crazy when a mare in season, ready to be mated ran right past his paddock.
Anyway, we caught her, and since she got out of the paddock that she was already in, I put her in the Boys paddock. Kosmo, mums big gelding, turned into a dragon when I opened the gate. I opened the gate into the paddock, to push the boys away, and then I asked her to walk through with me on the outside of the gate like I have been training her to do. Of course, she had to be a cow and wouldn't go in at all, so I had to lead her in, and that is when Kosmo swooped in and started being a buttface. I was squished between Mare, Bigarse Evil Gelding and gate. Mare was freaking, so over her back I managed to whack Kosmo with the rope to get him off, he cantered off like I had personally hurt his feelings, which of course made Romeo canter off to, and then she wanted to canter off with them, so I had to unsquish myself, and hold Mare at the same time so I could unclip her. That was when Romeo decided to come back, and then when he got to us he went all ape on Kosmo, and then once he got Kosmo away, he decided to go all stallion. Miley was going, 'Eww, get away from me' and kicking out at him, and moving away from him at the same time, squishing me again, so I managed to fend Romeo off before he started trying to go all Discovery Channel on her, swing her away from me so I could get away from her and through the gate, still holding the rope, and then I managed to pull her to me and unclip the rope from her halter, and then Romeo started trying to mate with her. Well lets just say, he didn't exactly get anywhere, couldn't even get it in
So a while later, when the storm was rolling in, I fixed all the gates so I could herd them out of their paddcok and down into the bottom one that Miley was originally in, to give them shelter from the rain. I herded them because it's easier than trying to wangle three horses down a driveway without walking about a thousand miles. So nyway, the Boys knew the drill and they galloped up to the gate, out it and down the driveway, what they were supposed to do. Of course, Miley didn't want to follow them out the gate, but then she wanted to follow then and decided to run down the fence line, and then she somehow managed to squeeze her way under a wire fence. She crawled out on her tummy. I didn't even know it was possible for a horse to do that. Anyway, so she got out into the driveway and followed the boys in the paddock. I shut the gate, went in there to check her over, and she was fine. As soon as Romeo got in there though, the bugger tried to roll in the red dirt. No way, not after I had spent nearly three hours trying to get him white again! So I rushed into the paddock and managed to haul him up before he got red again. Then they all decided they had to run around like crazy horses, but I got some pretty photos
Damn Miley got out again last night, at about 10:30. I put her in the paddock and Romeo went all Discovery Channel on her again. I closed the gate that would let her go down the road again, and just like I thought, the little b!tch was out again this morning.
I have a plan to get her respecting electric fences - make up a pen for her, and then make another pen up around the outside and hot both up. When she gets out of it, she will be too fast for the first one, but not for the second one, and she will get a good boot and then she shouldn't be getting out again... I need to have two otherwise she is too fast for them.
I have decided that mares suck. I've never had so much trouble with another horse in my life
