I'm going to be purchasing a 10 week old GSD puppy this weekend. She will have had all her vaccines, worming, etc. I'm just wondering what the likelyhood of her getting parvo is in the following situation?
My boyfriends parents breed labrador puppies and last year one of them got parvo. The puppy survived but I've heard that parvo can exist in a dormant sort of state in the ground or on the soles of shoes etc and then reinfect dogs that come into contact with the area. Also, they've kept the surviving puppy so would this dog act as a carrier of parvo? They have a farm so its not practical to sanitise everything and I visit them a fair bit. I'm thinking that I shouldn't bring my puppy with me when I visit but I'm not sure how long I'd have to keep this up.
Perhaps I'm paranoid, but if I do visit my boyfriends family should I be disinfecting the soles of my shoes etc so I'm not acting as a carrier? I also heard that dogs are only prone to parvo when they are puppies, is that true?
I dont really know much about parvo but I'm quite prepared to go to any lengths to make sure my new puppy doesnt get sick.
