I am 54 and have had dogs/cats/birds all my life. I do many things that are perceived as "wrong" Too bad. It works for us, has done and still does through the times with multiple pets.
Mine all eat from the same baking dish of dry food there for them 24/7. They do have their raw individually.
I do not believe that we have to "master"them or be in control 24/7.
We all have to live together and we manage to all smooth off the rough edges to peaceful and mutually fulfilling cohabitation.
For example they know that outside they can rough house all they like. Inside however it is gentle. If they are in my way I will step over them if I choose. If I have a bag of groceries in my arms they are told to move.
I do no direct training bar sit, stay, no, move and down. They learn maybe from positive and consistent reinforcement.
It never takes very long. Maybe all my dogs in 30 years have been intelligent.
They have learned to go to the door to be let out for the toilet. I trained the 2 pups by going out with them and peeing on the lawn. (I live on a farm)
The male took a little longer than the female. Sometimes it used to be like syncronised swimming. Di says widdle widdle and out they went and squatted at the same time.
They were told a few times no to being on the bed at night. They seem to know it is ok if I am in there alone or it is still daytime.
I will not trust any dog alone with kids so steps are taken so that dogs and kids are all happy when this happens.
Bottom line is that I feel that it is a mutual effort. We choose to live with them, make sure their needs are met and they in turn enrich our lives within mutually acceptable guidelines if indeed these are met.
Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.
I actually do all those things that people and some trainers advise against Because i think their reason is plain stupid and unjustified I allow my dogs on couch, i allow my dogs go through door first when needed, I don't care whether I eat before or after them (and they don't either), I play tug-a-war and let them win and so many other things I can't remember. I've had dogs all my life and it was the same with all of them. It seems I do everything wrong but I have and have had well behaved and well mannered polite doggies
