Hi everyone, this is my first thread here so thought I would share a horrible, but funny now that everyone is OK, story that happened in the weekend.
We decided to go to the beach on Saturday because it was really hot and so the OH could have a bit of a beach fish and were really keen to take the dogs with us
They both have some lead aggression issues so we were hoping to find somewhere reasonably quiet. We didnt think this through properly considering how hot it was.
Anyway, after about 5 or 6 hours in the car (we had been out and walked along a couple of other beaches), we found a beach. My and daughter and dogs waited in car while the OH checked it out. He came back and said it looked good.
We all got our stuff together and headed over. Turns out there was a kind of "cliff" down to the beach. It wasnt vertical, it was like big rock type steps that we would need to pick our way down. I am not sure if you are gettign th epicture but quite safe, and me, my daughter and Pippi with her 2 inch legs managed to walk dwn it very easily.
Not a problem I though. Doing what I normally do in that situation, I let Barney off his lead so he could safely pick his own way down. He pulls on the lead when he gets excited and I didnt want him dragging us down at his speed.
Pippi doesnt have any ears so she was going to remain on lead. Not a problem, she weighs 6 kilos so she cant pull anyone anywhere no matter how much effort she puts in.
Anyway, I released Barney's lead and before I even had a chance to think about it, he ran to and right off the edge of the "cliff". He didnt even pause to check out the route down. I watched in horror as he was in mid air and then dropped. Did he drop onto the ledge about 1 metre below? Nope, he dropped all the way to the bottom ledge about 12 feet below where I actuallyheard the clunk as he hit.
My stomach dropped and I felt sick. My OH was standing there was his hand over his mouth and I was screaming at him "has he got up, is he up, is he up" because all I could see in my head was a crumpled body at the bottom (OH was right at the edge, I was about 2 or 3 metres away). I ran to the edge and thankfully he was up.
We raced down to the bottom and we get there and he has tried to run through a "puddle" which turned out to be a big hole in the rock filled with water and there he was scrabbling at the edge trying to get out.
Anyway, cut to the end, I reckon he is a very lucky boy. OH said he landed on his front legs which then splayed out and his chin connected with the rock. And apart from a graze on his chin, he had no injuries...didnt even chip a tooth.
Needless to say, we did not stay and arrived home a couple of hours later where I promptly rang a vet to check what I needed to look for (I didnt rush him in as apart from being slightly subdued, he was fine).
Anyway, that is the last time we will be letting him off lead to pick his own way "safely" down a "cliff".
I felt sick for the rest of the day and even now when I picture the fall it makes me ill. But at the same time, as disturbing as it is, we have had a couple of giggles about it and even contemplated changing his nam to Cliff or SuperBarney.
Just thought I would share, I am amzed it even happened. Its not like its the first time he has had to pick his own way down, and previously the cliffs have been much steeper with no "easy" way.
