Today I took Roscoe to the vet for a sore front paw- he has been licking at it constantly for 3 days and its red and swollen. Background is that he is a rescue dog,6yrs of age, we have had him for 6 mths. We have never taken him to the vet before because:
- he came from a shelter and vacinations/desexing was already done
- we goto dog club every week so know lots of "dog" people and have not needed any vet advice,
- we had a dog PTS 3 weeks before getting this dog so were well used to dogs and felt confident with his care
anyway- todays vet visit left a really bad taste in my mouth. I am NEVER going back there. The vet spent the first 20 min of the consultation talking about his diet and why I should be feeding science diet (which of course- he sells). We feed raw/barf with added sachas blend and fish oils. The dog is very well fed and there is NO WAY I would put him on science diet. He told me that all bones are bad, that his teath will get too much tarter from eating soft meat etc etc.
so, 20 min into consult and he has not even looked at the sore paw. When he does it is obvious the dog is in pain and not happy. He prescribs antibiotics/fungal skin wash for the paw/topical cream. Those plus consult come to $180. The consult fee of $56 is fine, however the other things were sold at such expensive prices- I have just looked them up at vet direct (where we get our flea/heartworm etc stuff from) and the same brands are half the price on there.
I really feel like we walked into a shop and a salesman tried to sell us dog food we did not need, and other things at a hugely inflated price. I was expecting a caring professional. YUKKO- I feel quite bitter about it.
I am a registered nurse at a large teaching hospital. I know how to look after a wound. I wanted him to make sure there was nothing seriously wrong or imbeded in the paw.
I am NEVER going back there!
OK- rant over.
