Had an incident yesterday with my Dobe Girl, Flirtt, and wondered what others on here thought/ had to say....
I'd taken both dogs to the footy oval where they had had a HUGE run and was walking them home the long way round so they could cool off before going in their day run. Both were on lead, although my Mom was walking Flirtty which is unusual, usually I hold both leads. The dogs were tired(ish), not pulling along, not lagging behind, just, well, wandering home. Casual and relaxed.
So, we went up a street which I dont often go up, went past a big bushy tree bordering someone's lawn, and all of a sudden a little white dog (Maltese size) rushed out accross the lawn to the pavement barking and growling and sort of went to nip at Flirtt when Flirtt put her head down to sniff. Well, Flirtt initially wanted to play, but on getting her nose nipped she put her mouth around the little dog. I think she at first thought play, then prey, then "Hey, ****, what was that??!!!". I know she did not break skin, but she did grab it and sort of pick it up, then dropped it. Once she'd dropped it she sort of stood back because mum had given her one almighty correction on the collar. In my opinion she gave the dog a "correction" for nipping her and put it down, she wasn't slavering and hyped and trying to tear it apart... my observation of her behaviour and body langauge was: suprise, then formal action for the nip, then finished (did that make sense?).
So the little dog yelped and screamed and went on, and the owner rushed over and picked up her dog and gave me one almighty mouthful about my dangerous, viscious dogs. I told her (pretty calmly, I thought) that had her dog been on a leash, it would not have occurred because a) my dogs were on leash and under my control b) my dogs did not initiate contact, her dog rushed over to us and c) I don't feel I can in any way be obligated to be responsible for her dog and d) I couldn't possibly have known before passing the bush that she was out in her yard with her dog and no restraints on the dog. At this point both my dogs were just kinda standing there beside us- not hyped and on the attack type thing...
So this woman said "but I just brought him out to put in the car" (the dog), and I reiterated that without any type of front fence a leash is a pretty good idea to prevent these things occurring.... well, I got another mouthful, threats that she will complain to local council about my dogs being aggressive and she darn well near punched me. Meanwhile she's holding the bloody little white thing and reinforcing it like crazy.
So, I feel pretty wronged, and I hope like crazy she does not complain to council... here in Vic the laws around working breeds are pretty harsh... and I was wondering if anyone else had a different perspective to mine? Should I have done something different?
I'll listen to any comments/ opinions!
Thanks in advance :-)
