I don't like letting my dog off lead in my front yard because she jumps the fence and nicks off across the very quiet road (double spoon drains tend to slow the traffic), to my neighbour's place with her beagle friends. I'm not sure what she's going to do when he moves out with his dogs though.
At the footy oval, she comes when she's called or I hide and she panics looking for me. So I practice that - ie she learns if she doesn't come, it's going to be really hard to find me, so she is very responsive. But not all dogs care if their owner is nowhere to be seen.
I can call her away from dogs she wants to say hello to at the beach or out of a play run with another dog. Again - if she doesn't come immediately, I start running up the beach away from her - PANIC. Sometimes she comes because chasing me is more fun.
It's an ongoing thing I have to practice every day or it becomes more of a "in a minute, I'm busy now" kind of response - which really isn't good enough. Is odd though, the dogs I've had before, just come when they're called with no argument or selective hearing.
