I adopted a little moodle from a shelter a couple of days ago. She was in foster care, and she is lovely.
However, her page online said she had been flea treated and heartworm treated, but today I discovered that she was completely infested with fleas, about 50 of them that I could see without looking very closely. I immediately went out and bought frontline and treated her. I wanted to get something that also treats worms, but they told me if she has been treated for heartworm I can't use the stuff that you drip on her neck that prevents heartworm, hence why I got something for fleas only.
When I got home I checked her vaccination card, and she has never been given an injection for heartworm.
So I paid $250 for a dog that they didn't need to desex (she was already desexed when they got her) and who wasn't treated for fleas or heartworm. They were given the dog, stuck her in a foster home for a month, then adopted her out. She would have cost them maybe $30 in food and that's it.
It wouldn't have been a huge deal, except we have 6 cats in the house. Treating 6 cats for fleas and worms costs $65 for one month's treatment, so they normally only get treated every 6 months, or when needed.
They were treated a couple of days before the dog was brought into the house, so hopefully that will prevent them from getting fleas, but I am not happy that I was not told that she hasn't been treated for fleas in the last month. If I had been told, I obviously would have done that before bringing her home to meet the cats and sleep on our bed and sit on our laps etc etc.
So what do I do now? Can I complain and get a partial refund or something? The frontline cost me $30, which isn't really a big deal, but it should have been included in the $250 I paid for the dog... Plus it's really icky. I found one on my hand that was biting me!
I would appreciate any advice...
