Our favorite oils are Vanilla , Ecalyptus and Lavendar..
We have a water container that we add the oil to, and a fan sits above the container constantly circulating and aerating the water and dispersing the scent throughout the rooms... All we need to do is keep a watch on the water level and top up with more water and oil as required..
Nil-o-dor can be rather successful.
Although when I've had smelly dogs I have always found the best way to deal with it is to find a LONG-LASTING shampoo for the dogs, that way the house won't smell in the first place.
Wet dog is the worst culprit of house doggy odour. Lol.
This is supposed to be fantastic stuff. Someone on DOL recommended it, really really raved about it. I haven't got round to ordering any yet but want to give it a try.

The best things in life, aren't things
May or may not apply for dogs, but for stinky rats you can use diluted vanilla extract (food flavouring) to spray on the bedding and can also put a dab on their fur as it is ok for them to eat/lick (can help stop them attacking each other when introduced).
For rats you shouldn't use the fake essence flavouring so I'm not sure if it could be bad for dogs as well?
