So Mum had a horsesports comp this weekend, so I decided Bella could come with. We got there and I took her for a walk to let her get used to all the new sights and smells. There were quite a few other little dogs there, too. She didnt bark much when we first got there, only when another person rocked up. She was quiet all day, wasn't drooling, seemed very relaxed. She was drinking and sleeping, and sitting and dropping when I asked (). She refused to eat any of her new chews that I got her; I think that might of been because she hasnt had them before, she ate her food at dinner time well enough. When it started to turn dark she started barking and acting very suspicious of everyone, even barking up a storm at Mum when she came around the corner. I had her in my tent at night, so I could keep her warm in case it got freezing and so I couldstop her barking if she started up in the middle of the night, as there were other people camping too.
Today she wasnt so whatever about things, she barked at people as they went by, but she didnt bark at the horses cantering and trotting past. A (very annoying) guy who was camping next to us came over for a chat with Dad. Bella started barking and growling, she had been on my lap. I instantly said a firm 'NO', dumped her on the ground, stood up and led her away on a tight lead. Did I discipline correctly? I took her back once I had made her sit, stay and keep her attention on me for a minute, and sat back down. She didnt bark again at the guy. Also, a JRT was off lead and came up to Bella, obviously wanting to make a new friend, and Bella went ape at him. she was barking and growling, trying to lunge. The other dog went away, and I did the same thing that I did with Bella barking at the guy, only I took her all the way back to the float and tied her up, after making her sit etc etc. Was this correct? She also met a couple of (gorgeous) shih-tzu, she wasnt very hostile with them. This might be silly, but I had heard that animals prefer members of their own breed... Do you think this might have been the case?
I'm planning taking her whenever we go to a show from now on, She enjoyed her little outing very much!
