For those who dont know this was from my other thread...
I am Sam! 4/4/10
So he is home. My beautiful little BC boy.
Yesterday we took a drive to Canberra. Chiko, Buzz, my mother and my sister came along for the ride. It was a fairly good drive and we made great time. And despite getting lost we got to the DAS earlier than expected.
Brendon was waiting for us with a very excited little man. He was over joyed to be meeting new people, even though he was not too keen on meeting the dogs. He had claimed a little santa toy and was running around so proud of his find. When I told him to get in the car because he was coming home with us, he almost fell over himself in excitement!
Apart from his excited bouncing every time we slowed or stopped, and a large amount of drooly licking, it turned out to be a rather uneventful trip home.
When we got home we found out how far his social issues go, when he got scared of Gabby and chose to growl and try to chase her instead of a happy greeting. He is very insecure, and while he is a lovely friendly dog toward humans, he doesn’t handle dog-dog interaction very well. Despite this set back, I am quite confident that we can get through this insecurity. Even in just the past few hours he has learnt to get along with the others in small, controlled play sessions. But unfortunately that is going to take time, and while I am not with him outside he has to be penned in the horse yard, where he will be left alone by the other dogs. But, thank god, this will only be temporary, just until we can correct this behavior.
But all in all he is a lovely dog, and exactly what I am looking for!
On the way home
Two steps forward, One step back... 5/4/10
Today we did not go so well with the socialization. We were happy to meet Katie through the fence and to play with Buzz, until buzz growled. Then we got scared and growled back and almost had an argument.
At lease he called off when I called him. But we had to leave it there.
On a more positive note, he had a lesson in patience and sharing. Did well with that. Fetch the toy, bring it back, drop it and I will get a treat. This worked well. Got four half hour play sessions and tired out well. When I feel a bit better I will take him for morning walks, it gets light earlier now so that should not be a problem.
Still have to work on his socialization especially with gabby.
Rainy day... 6/4/10
Went for a walk in the morning. Very responsive to correction. Better still with a combination of verbal and physical correction. Mind you this all flies out the window when he gets distracted or excited. Had to work so he was left to his own devices all day. He was very excited to see me. Not so excited to have a bath though because he was all muddy!
Worked on being calm inside, did well.
He is incredibly smart, can sit and drop with hand signals.
The nasty things we do... 7/4/10
Today Sam is going to the vet for the snip!!! Poor bugga
Back from the vet. We are nut-less with a cone of shame!!
Everything went well, very happy to see me again.
Gets to stay inside tonight, calmed down eventually sat or lay down on the lead without issues. Socialization is going well, did not growl at any of the dogs at the vet or at gabby. No growl all day
Will have to work on his excitement level when meeting new people. Will have a lot to do with peoples reaction to him.
He has now earnt the name "Nuttless Wonder!"
Dang it!!... 8/4/10
Today I had to work all day, and it rained, so after his run he got stuck in the kennel so his stitches didn’t get muddy From the barking I heard coming in the drive when I got home he is not a happy sausage. This morning when we went down to the kennel even though Pep and CC started barking quite nastily, instead of standing up to them and growling, Sam stepped back inline with me to follow my lead. I am very pleased with this development, it shows his trust in me is building.
Today we took our first trip into town.
Boy did we rock that!!
Sam sniffed around a bit but stopped when I told him... most of the time. We went through the supermarket, on the escalators, we even braved Coles. AND WE PULLED IT OFF! He sniffed at the fresh meat but stopped when I told him “no”. He didn’t even look at the shelves as we walked past, he sat, he was calm when people went past, he did great.
The only down side of our training session is that on the way out something near the ramp to the carpark startled him and he barked, but he did stop and come with me when I told him. What ever it was had the same affect on Gabby, although she knew better than to bark.
But all in all he did a fantastic job on his first try. I am so proud!
So I will update this, if not with my daily notes then in weekly batches. I have to document everything anyway
