Not my beautiful girls !!!!
The amount of reported alleged human bites from GSDs has esculated to a massive degree.
I personally think it is a mixture of things, but generally being caused from ppl owning the breed with no experience whatsoever of their needs, requirements and natural protection instinct.
It's happened in this country before hasn't it?
A toddler wandered into our yard when he was on a runner at one house, and he just followed the little one along, didn't bark or anything. Just glad I looked out the window and saw him (alerted to the toddler being there by her aunty and other relatives yelling from the back lane). Even though Zook did nothing to the toddler, the relatives threatened to call the police! Go figure, they were trespassing and Zook hadn't done anything to the little one.
Doing an assignment on Pit bulls for my vet nursing course i have come across quiet alot of interesting info, stats etc.. I was reading a thesis on how genetic testing has proved that one breed wont be more aggressive than another breed purely because of the breed that it is.
I think Pit bulls are very sadly misunderstood dogs and i dont think they should be punished for what WE have made them to be. WE bred these dogs to have the qualities and attributes and it is up to US to socialise them properly and make sure appropriate training is in place. Just like we bred pekignese to have flat faces and trouble breathing we bred pit bulls to be highly loyal, strong and powerful dogs.
Anydog can attack someone if it has not been socialised properly or if it is provoked. If someone comes up and starts annoying the crap out of you and wont quit it then you WILL retalliate, mabye verbally - a dog will give many warnings - body language, vocalisations etc before it will attack someone and it is generally only if it feels very theatend and has given prior warning that it will actually bite someone. They do give warnings and if people dont understand them then they shouldnt own a dog.
Predatory dominance is obvious quite early on in the dogs behaviour and it seems a bit silly to me that if this dog had this sort of behaviour it would be left with an elderly woman. I dont think any dog would for no reason attack someone unless it was protecting something, felt very threatend or had a mental problem. I wonder what happened prior to this dog attacking the lady?
ANY breed has the potential to do what this dog it and if this dog wasnt socialised properly and the owners didnt train the dog properly then no it is not that dogs fault it is THE OWNERS fault. i dont feel the breed should be blamed for this, it should be incompetant owners.
Pit bulls are targeted because of the fact that they are restricted by BSL, for all we know this dog could have been a bloody labradoodle. There have been no photos of the dog released (and i think the media like to keep it that way) Any bulll breed will be called a pit bull if it is involved in an attack. A doberman or rotty will often be called a pit bull if it attacks someone this guy probably got the dog out of a pet shop advertised as a staffy x for all we know.
Just because the dog is yay high and yay wide and this colour and this weight they will call it a pit bull because it makes headlines. If they write fluffy the golden retreiver attacked his owner people arent going to pay as much attention as PIT BULL ATTACKS OWNER splashed over the paper. Because the public doesnt have much exposure to the pit bull and are only going of a stereotype that these dogs just want to eat people they are going to pay more attention.
ive had my say but it is my opinion and im fine if people disagree but from my exposure to these dogs and other bull breeds i know they arent out for blood. Pit bulls dont show overt human aggression yes they do have a tendency towards dog aggression but thats a different ball park.
All bull breeds and dogs such as rottys and shepherds will be targeted eventually because they are big dogs often trained for protection so people think they are vicious which couldnt be further from the truth. Dogs may exhibit more dominant behaviour and may be trained to do different things but the breed temperament should never be based on a stereo type or individual dog.
If you disagree with me and want to argue please dont bring it up in the thread PM me because i think this thread is quite educational to people on the forum and it is good to see other peoples POV on the subject.
Oh and another thing to add, do you ever hear anything positive about this breed? like the fact that many pit bulls were involved in finding the victims of the 9/11 bombings or have been involved in rescue work for the past 50 odd years and that they have saved many lives in one way or another? Public veiw doesnt want to know that this breed can do good things, the human race is a little strange i think because of the fact that we thrive on bad news and not many care about the good things that happen. You wont hear about a labrador attacking someone because they want to promte the breed as being gentle.. i.e guide dogs. but you will hear about any bull breed because some people want them gone.
If the American Staffy is the same dog as the pitbull, are they ASy's gonna be next?
Quote taken from this site............A common question regarding the APBT is, "How is this breed different from the American Staffordshire Terrier?". In the eyes of the United Kennel Club, they are the same breed, but many disagree. Some AKC-registered American Staffordshire Terriers are dual-registered as American Pit Bull Terriers with the UKC; .....
