Small dogs come into season earlier than medium and large breeds. Because their body matures earlier.
So in a nutshell I would have a toy breed done at 5 months.
Then just do what your vet said. I said 5 months because you were paranoid if she came into season.
Bar one, (and that was only done late last year) all of mine are entire, it's not something that worries me.
Thanks for your advice!
If she comes in before you get her done then you will cope and put in procedures to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
Even as a breeder I do that all the time. Otherwise by now I would have Whippet X Gordon Setter which doesn't even bear thinking about and another two whippet/whippet litters.
In fact, if I can be blunt, which I'm normally not, but I think I'm tired, you treat Poppy much the same as I do when one of mine are in season.
But you'll have it done in time because you are a sensible owner and will have nothing to worry about.
Frosty was done at 8 weeks. She was pretty tiny then.
And she got a bucket on her head. And she licked a lot at the stitches when it came off, but I put aloe vera on them, and that put her off.
If you're really paranoid about seasons but don't want to desex early (or your vet doesn't), ask about the pill for bitches, it should prevent her from coming into season. Seasons are messy. Imagine having a period without a pad, you get the idea. Not to mention the puppy risk.

Amy, a reason I have never had entire bitches till now was paranoia over seasons. To be honest, I would have a male any day compared to a female...bugga though, they suck you in, lol. If you plan in advance have your strategies in place should she come in early, you will have no problems. I had no idea Pretty would be in season again barely 4 months from giving birth in OCT but knew what I would be doing if she did before I could get her desexed.
Any posts made under the name of Di_dee1 one can be used by anyone as I do not give a rats.
Anyway, I have Max booked in for his "snip" next Wednesday. He's going in Tuesday night (only because i cant get him in after 9 on the day) and I'll pick him up after work on the Wednesday.
Should I be getting him one of those bucket collars? Do I need to take Thursday off work?
I cant remember what I did when I had my female cat desexed (RIP poor old girl) as it was 15 years ago.
