I don't think tail docking is barbaric if it's done properly. I could compare it to circumcision in male humans I guess. Pups are docked within first few days after they're born, and it really does not hurt and heals quickly. However, I do not think it is necessary, especially if dog is not a working dog that may get injured (I honestly doubt that percentage of injuring a tail is all that high with working dogs ).
Ear cropping is awful in my opinion. It's a lengthy process and pup is usually 3 to 4 months old when its done, has to wear this thing on its head to keep ears in a position, therefore can't play with other dogs so it doesn't hurt his ears. It' also more prone to infections, and the results are not always great. Absolutely unnecessary. However, I really really like dobermans when they're cropped/docked, but if I had a doberman pup and have a choice of docking/cropping I wouldn't do it just for sake of dog's looks.
