myth : pound dogs cannot be trained
myth : all behaviour problems are the dogs issue (the dumb humans had nothing to do with it)
myth : cows milk will upset all dogs tummies
myth : starving a dog will make it a better guard dog
all pound dogs have nasty issues (that pet shop dogs and registered pure bred dogs do not have)
the place to get your new puppy is a pet shop (ARRGGHHH)
the place to get your new puppy is from a newspaper ad or trading post or internet classified.
All dogs are well nourished on human food leftovers. Anything people can eat is safe for dogs.
Rubbing a dogs nose in "it" will teach it not to...
Scolding a dog and hitting it when you finally get it to come back to you will make it come to you when you call next time (I saw this one in action a couple of days ago ARRGGH).
Anyone can be a good dog owner and trainer with no effort on their part.
It's ok not to take a dog for a walk if you have a big back yard.
getting a second dog as companion for your current dog will solve all the current behaviour problems.
Myth: There is something wrong with pound puppies, hence why they are in a shelter.
Education not Legislation
When Asher is looking for love, what does he do? Does he come up to you and demand attention (however innocently) or does he whimper for it?
Personally, I withhold my attention when a dog does this to me, they get attention when I call them to give attention to them. I wait till the dog has walked away and is distracted by something else or has laid down. For me and in my experience this has mad training a dream. It makes the dogs that much more willing to do what I am asking of them because they are getting my attention as well as the treat. It also helps to solidify the recall Again, this is in my experience with both fosters/rescues and my current pup.
I believe dogs know more then we give them credit for.
When I am feeling sad, Mollie comes over for a cuddle, rather then the usual-ball-in-her-mouth for a game of fetch.
When I am feeling happy, Mollie will be hyperactive too and want to play and have fun.
I believe she honestly does understand my moods and emotions.
They know the change in our voice, the change in our facial expression and our actions.
