No they don't Anne, but if my spinal cord gets damaged a neurosurgeon would be great to have.
Good luck Pugger, my son in law had this surgery about 6 years ago, it was done by a surgeon in Wangaratta, it took him a couple of months before he could get back to work, and his was a complete success, so there are always good stories along with the bad.
A neuro Surgeon did my son's back. Good luck!

Really Di? I have an orthopedic guy doing mine.
My dad had 3 disks removed and replaced a few years ago, he had some trouble after with his heart - they think it all just hit him how serious it was and he started to panic. he was up and about the next day, home a week later - was told to rest for 6 months, but was up and about within weeks

Good luck Pugger! Hope it goes brilliantly!!
You have been told the statistics haven't you?? Something like 70% of patients state there is improvement post op, 20% state no difference and 10% state it makes things worse.
Please don't think it is as easy as a couple of months of recovery. It took 2 years for my recovery and even now 6 yrs later, I have much much less function than I did before. It can be very frustraiting, lonely and depressing (recovery that is). After saying that, I definately do not EVER want another fusion-because of the recovery. However had I not had the fusion, I hate to think how horrible my life would be now. I was existing before surgery, far from living.
You have to have a VERY positive outlook in your recovery phase with the ability to accept so many alternative modes of pain management, because thats what you do. You learn to manage the pain - you do not cure it!
I assume you have tried hydrotherapy on a consistant weekly basis? This works wonders with some people and frankly even though it is a pain to motivate yourself to get in that pool twice a weeks, if you can control your pain with hydro, it is a much better option than surgery, and thats speaking from experience.
Good luck, I certainly do not envy you!
