I think the highlighted part sums it up in a nutshell! I also think that the best food for each dog is the food the owner is comfortable giving it, to a degree, of course.
You all know that I feed a natural raw diet to my dog. You all know how much I belive in it. But nothing gives me the right to try and push my belief down anyone's throat so I will never do that. At least I don't think I have. Lol. Probably because from experience I have learnt that there is nothing worse than a reformed smoker!
I do notice a difference with different kibbles I've used over the years, some being much better than others. But I dont know enough about what they need to feel conferdent feeding anything else.
At the moment I'm feeding Bonny working dog, I know it's not the greatest dry food in the world but it's the only one that seems to keep the weight on Griffen.
No I don't think it is too short for an assessment! I can see the difference in their coat...their energy levels...they do not have foul breath...and their poops break down quickly due to minimal amount of fillers in it. They do NOT get diarrhoea and Sumo does not have bleeding bowels. I trust what my vet is saying...that we are shortening our dogs lives by giving them preservatives and highly processed foods etc. I have an opportunity to give my dogs the best and they will get the best. YES...I STRONGLY believe my dogs will live longer than a Staffy fed commercial foods!
Most people don't realise there is more to dog foods than just the stuff they buy from the vets, pet stores and the supermarket. Once they start to learn about these things for themselves then they are equipped to make these kinds of decisions for themselves.
I have heard of the 'prey' model diets, thankfully it looks like a passing fad with the Americans able to shoot animals they see and use them for foods.
What do you think dogs in the outback are fed? It's been raw roo meat from those that are shot or beef basically forever and those dogs are incredibly fit, healthy and capable of surviving almost anything.
As you said in your post it is about what works best for you and your dog. No-one has any right to criticise anyone for what they are feeding unless it is causing an allergic reaction - in which case I recommend doing exactly what Cleas did and changing diet to something that is far healthier for them.
ETA: Also, if Cleas can see the difference in her dogs already after just 4 weeks, that speaks volumes to me! That means she is doing the best for her dogs as she possibly can, and isn't that what it all comes down to? Doing the best you possibly can for your dog/the dogs in your care?

Good post, Angela.
I think a lot of the argument between raw food diet and commercial food diet can also comd down to what each individual is taught or told by their veterinarian. Often their vet is the person whom they speak to about dietary issues.
And like I've said before, if you put 100 vets in a room together, you are also going to see them differ in their opinions.
Look at all dietary options, do your homework, toss it up and choose what is most sensible and agreeable to you and your dog.
I agree. If you dog is not thriving on the food your are feeding...if they get diarrhoea etc etc...then obviously there is something worng with their diet...then change it until you find the best food for them!
Tell you the truth.. I would love to cook Boss meals for him but I dont have the time or enegry.
He is a dog... Yes a dog. He would rather eat a dead sheep then chicken mince and rice.
Yes we feed him PAL dog nuts.. OMG.. Im a bad dog owner.
Seriously I dont care what people feed their dogs.
Its their choice.
I could do it now cos im not working at the moment but when I go back to work fulltime, I wont be in the mood to come home and cook something for OH then something for Boss.
Boss gets fed raw meat when we get it for him. Its a treat for him.
I reckon well done to the people that feed their dogs the barf diet. A lot of research has been put into it.
I just reckon it wouldnt be good for our lifestyle.
