I have a 1 year old Lhasa Apso, who's a bit of a sensitive little bugger. From day one, we've had trouble feeding him. After recommendation from a vet, we put him on Eukanuba dry food - which left him severely constipated. Second recommendation was a dry/wet combo of Hills Science Diet.
The dry/wet combo of Hills works great, dog's happy and healthy - but my wallet is pretty empty because of it! It's costing us an arm and a leg to keep him on that, and we're pretty strapped for cash right now - so I started looking into a raw food diet for him.
There's a tonne of different information out there about it, good and bad, do this do that, pretty confusing really. Though I would just jump on board, and ordered a 2kg tub of Roo/Beef mince from Bucket O Beef. He's about 10kg, so have been giving him 100g morning and night. He loves it, of course, but it's not doing wonders for his poo.
Twice now he's come inside with a cake of poo stuck to his bum. It's not runny/sloppy, seems well formed enough. It just seems as though it's not compacted, if thats the right word, enough for him to pass it smoothly. He has been on it morning/night for a week now. Oh, and it SMELLS - bad! I know poo doesn't smell like a field of flowers, but this is make-you-gag potent.
Now it could be quite simply I've completely stuffed up the whole concept. I given him a tiny bit of blended carrots/spinach (it's what I had in the house at the time) with it as well. But who knows if I'm doing it right!
I would really like to find a balance that suits him, and his sensitive stomach. He's got free access to inside, so I'm getting a bit sick of having to scrub carpets.
Can anyone advise whether this is a normal "breaking in" sort of thing, or if I should be feeding him differently?
