Having had a lot of experience with Kelpies I thought I would start a thread that hopefully catches the attention of potential Kelpie owners or those already with a Kelpie.
If you have purchased a Kelpie from working lines be prepared to keep this dog occupied. They will have unlimited energy both physically and mentally.
On the other hand, if you like this dog and don't live on the land with stock for them to work then please, please buy a Kelpie from Show Lines. Your show Kelpie will be either Chocolate or Black. There are very few good two tone Show Kelpies out there, so that is one of your first indicators.
Look for ribbons, trophies and challenge certificates and all those things that the general pet buying owner is not interested in seeing. Because a working Kelpie does not cut it in the show ring the same way that a show Kelpie cannot cut it as a working dog.
It's not to say that a show Kelpie with training cannot make an average worker, but that's exactly what they'll be, an average worker that most farmers would put a bullet thru.
The instinct is there, the intelligence is there but that relentless drive is not.
Most of my Kelpie's lost that stupid puppy stage at 9 months of age, it was like a trigger went off in their brain and they were the most pleasurable dog to live with. No more holes, no more wrecking pot plants etc. But a faithful companion who excelled at dog sports and if given this mental stimulation was happy with a 20 minute walk or run at the dog park/day.
Out of all my Kelpies and I've had lots of them I only had one that tried my patience. She showed the most working ability out of all of them. Some showed non at all. But once I found what motivated her to channel her energy for good rather than evil then nothing stopped her and she became one of my all time favourites.
