What about fillling a bucket of water and placing it near where you feed Inca.. Wasps like water.. It might help until you find the nest..
If you a BBQ and got a cover it on, look under it.. the nest might be there. I remeber seeing an email last year about a huge wasp nest made under a BBQ cover
I saw that pic - that nest was HUGE!!!
The way I've been told to use for locating nest is to put a small amount of tinned cat food (or maybe some of Inca's food) out and watch the wasps pick up the food, and watch which way they fly after that. They usually make a direct line back to the nest. So you move the food a bit in that direction and keep moving it until you get close to the nest. To triangulate you'd need two lines and maybe four tins of food to make the lines eg put two tins out maybe 2m either side of where Inca feeds. Put the next two tins out on the lines that the wasps follow from the first two tins. Where the lines intersect - is where the nest is - does that make sense?
I suspect if it is an overwhelming amount of wasps that the nest is very close. They don't usually fly much more than 500m or so. And they don't tell other wasps where the food is, so all these wasps have found the food by random flying. They do individually remember where they've been.
You can make wasp traps out of soft drink bottles. You make a hole near the top and put the cut off end of another soft drink bottle into that like a funnel. You tie a bit of bait (eg the chicken) on a piece of string and suspend that inside the main bottle (from the main lid). You can put some water with a couple of teaspoons of sugar and a drop of detergent in the bottom to sort of drown them. My brother had some of these traps and they got full. I made one and only caught a couple of wasps.
Problem is Hy they don't fly away. They will actually stay there at the food hanging around, and rven just staying still on the timber deck for ages, and I mean ages. If Inca has had her fill and there is a piece left, these wasps don't take some and fly away, they will stay there for hours until they are chased away.
I will definately try the bottle trick!
We will also have everyone here do a hunt over the weekend.
Lol. Slaps forehead. Whilst typing I just remembered that before we got Inca I think there wwere wasps up at the jasmine vines or something at the back fence. Hmmm, will check that out too.
