Oh and of course the swelling of the vulva is the first sign together with nipples enlarging.
Sorry everyone couldn't think of a nicer way to put it.
Just realised that you've got one of each so get that enclosure built.
Also watch your male for signals. And if you do have to lock her away be prepared that your boy will carry on a bit and make some noise.

I'm not going to comment on this as I don't have the experience with this type of thing, but I am wondering could ONE of the dogs be desexed a bit earlier than the other to make it easier to manage? Also in bigger breeds if they are desexed earlier does it have any long term health issues if the dogs are not going to be shown (umm you can't show if you desex can you), what I'm getting at is if they don't fully develop can this affect things long term? Or is it just for aesthetics?
It's not shallow, we like what we like. I'd still like to know if early desex has any long term risks tho...
I think one of the risks for early desex - is all the bits are tiny - so there is more risk the vet chops something s/he doesn't want to. But some vets have some of the keyhole surgery tools so less risk there.
I'd have to google or phone AWL to find out what the other risks are.
Not desexing - increases the risk of various cancers, but desexing early increases the risk of one of the other cancers - but I think (guess) the change in risk is fairly tiny - dog has more chance of being hit by a car so to speak.
I know with cattle and humans - desexing the males before puberty results in a bigger creature but I don't know why. Male Eunuchs (spellin?) were often very tall and very fat. I don't know if they would have had more muscle tone if they were not castrated - or if the overweight problem had more to do with life style. Until 1900 or so - young boys were castrated to try to keep their singing voices. And some were done for living in harems - so they couldn't make the women pregnant. Not sure if that still happens now. Given there is still quite a bit of sex trafficking of women/slaves in Africa - who knows.
For a large dog, I think the longer you can safely hold out the better. I know people who have a giant dog and waited till it was 13 months old and it still stunted its growth.
anecdotes are not evidence.
